How do we make a bell?

First, a set of wooden and aluminium foundry patterns must be made. This requires, very importantly, the creation of exactly the right sizes and shapes. Size and shape determine the eventual note and tone of a cast bell. The wooden pattern (created by a skilled pattern maker) becomes the archival pattern for the bell. The aluminium pattern (which is in reality an aluminium bell cast from the wooden pattern) is the working foundry pattern from which all future bells of that size will be cast.
Secondly, there follows the casting in bronze and finishing. Tone tests may have been done on the aluminium patterns to ensure that the future bronze bells will meet specification. After casting, the bronze raw bell is fettled (cleaned) and then mounted in a tuning machine for the progress to completion as an harmonious, tuneful product!
